Porohy #2 (2026)

Олена Степанів, УСС, часопис Пороги

Dear Reader,

The reality in which we live is making one thing increasingly clear: the ideas that shape society, the individuals who expand its horizons, and the experience of war that leaves no room for indifference. This issue of Porohy ventures into territory many consider sacred. We attempt to examine society through the prism of religion as humanity’s earliest language for explaining the world—a framework that evolved from bringing order to chaos into an instrument of power and, ultimately, a hybrid weapon in the hands of an empire.

In our Figures section, we turn to Olena Stepaniv—the first female military officer in modern Ukraine and a distinguished scholar, whose strategic vision of Baltic–Black Sea cooperation and resilience in the Gulag have become enduring symbols of Ukrainian intellectual fortitude.

Alongside her story is a feature on TILKYTAK Records, a label dedicated to reviving Ukraine’s musical heritage on vinyl. Its work is an act of preserving cultural identity, etched into sound that endures even through the darkness of blackouts.

The Interview of this issue features activist Anastasiia Sihnaievska, who reflects on how the voice of Ukrainians has evolved from street demonstrations into a strategic force capable of driving tangible sanctions against the aggressor.

Taken together, these texts share a common purpose: to better understand the times in which we live and to find our own point of reference within them.

Wishing you a thoughtful read,
