About the Portal
Porohy is a cultural and political multimedia platform for the global Ukrainian community. The publication brings together voices from Ukraine and across Europe, offering interviews, analytical essays, and cultural criticism that explore the Ukrainian experience within a broader European context.
Porohy focuses not on isolated news events, but on the broader historical, social, and cultural contexts in which they emerge. We work with themes of identity, memory, culture, migration, democracy, and responsibility, focusing on the Ukrainian experience within the European space.
Our mission is to shape and disseminate a Ukrainian perspective on key social, political, and historical issues and to communicate it both to the Ukrainian community and to the international audience.
The digital platform porohy.cz is being developed by the civic initiative Perekotypole, which focuses on the digitisation of the magazine’s archive and the publication of new multilingual materials online and in print. Today, Porohy exists both as a print publication and as a growing multilingual digital platform connecting Ukrainian communities across Europe.
The portal serves as a space of long-term cultural memory, making over three decades of Ukrainian intellectual and cultural discourse accessible to new audiences. The platform is open to collaboration with researchers, cultural institutions, and independent authors.
The name Porohy metaphorically refers to the rapids of the Dnipro River — a symbol of Ukrainian freedom and statehood. It denotes a specific historical site where the Zaporizhian Sich was established, one of the foundations of Ukrainian political and civic tradition.
About the Journal Porohy
Porohy is a cultural and political monthly magazine founded in 1994 by the civic organization Ukrainian Initiative in the Czech Republic. The print publication was launched on the initiative of educator and politician Lidiya Raichynets-Zatovkaniuk in response to the need for a Ukrainian-language magazine for the Ukrainian community following the social changes of 1989 in Czechoslovakia, the revival of the diaspora, and new waves of migration.
Since its founding, Porohy has served as a space where ideas of different generations of Ukrainians intersect—descendants of the interwar émigré community and newly arrived migrants. The magazine has responded to events in Ukraine and the Czech Republic, documented community life, and shaped a public Ukrainian presence within the Czech context.
The magazine is published in print, with an electronic version available in PDF format. The print edition is issued by the Ukrainian Initiative in the Czech Republic with financial support from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic under the program supporting information in the languages of national minorities.
